Theatre Banshee is delighted to present the West Coast Premiere of Ronan Noone's play, Brendan. Banshee gives its penchant for Irish drama a new twist in this tale of a contemporary Irish immigrant making his way in New York City. Funny, fierce and touching, Brendan's journey could be that of any immigrant, as he discovers sometimes the things you leave behind don't stay behind.

Amir Abdullah, Patrick Quinlan and Eamon Sheehan
Troubling personal events in Ireland compel Brendan to make a new life in New York City. He slowly makes new friends and learns what it might mean to actually be an American. More importantly though, he grapples with his past and future in an effort to find true freedom and happiness.

Brendan features Amir Abdullah, Devereau Chumrau, Brian Danner (US), Kathleen M. Darcy, Catia Ojeda, Patrick Quinlan and Eamon Sheehan. The design team includes scenic design by Arthur MacBride, lighting by Bosco Flanagan, and costumes by Michele Young. McKerrin Kelly directs the production with Assistant Director Cameron J. Oro.

Questions that might get asked frequently

Q: Is Brendan family friendly? What's this play rated?
A: Plays don't get ratings like motion pictures, but for comparison sake, we'd give it a PG-13. There some profanity lifted straight from the New York City streets. There's also a character who is a prostitute, and while there's no nudity, there are sexual themes. There's some fighting too, but for some reason, no one seems to find violence offensive.

Q: I'm a student so I should get extra credit for seeing this, right?
A: Sadly, such decisions are not left to us. But if you're in school, we suggest you ask your instructor.

Q: How long is it?
A: It's about one hour and fifty minutes, and that includes an intermission where you can get one of our delicious Banshee Brownies.

Q: Is this really Irish theatre?
A: Technically, we'd have to say no. Playwright Ronan Noone was born in Ireland, but like Brendan, he emigrated to the USA. He currently lives in Boston and this play was written in the United States.
